Bikepacking Benches

Bench Archives - Canterbury, New Zealand

I often write about benches in an abstract way. They become symbols and metaphors when I talk about philosophical topics like reflection, presence, and connection. While these deeper meanings are true, I have noticed that in my search for this depth, I have looked past something so basic: benches are for rest.

I was reminded of this through these photos of benches in New Zealand. They were all taken this year on January 29th, when I set off for a little solo bike adventure for a few days, just south of Christchurch. Along my ride, I stopped at these benches. Looking back on those bench sits, all I can remember is how grateful I was to have those moments of rest. Sitting down, relaxing, taking in the view… What a treat
